What are biobased products?
A biobased product as defined in the 2002 Farm Bill is “a product determined by the Secretary of Agriculture to be a commercial or industrial product (other than food or feed) that is composed, in whole or in significant part, of biological products or renewable domestic agricultural materials (including plant, animal and marine materials) or forestry materials.” Today’s biobased labeling requirements call for only a 60% content of biobased materials. In addition to the reasons above the government has established a mandate to purchase biobased products throughout the agencies. These mandates were created in the 2002 Farm Bill signed by President Bush in May of 2002. This law requires Federal agencies to give procurement preference to biobased products. It is now mandatory to purchase these products and Federal agencies are required to develop affirmative procurement programs for their purchase.
